Wedding Budget Calculator

Split your total wedding budget across the 10 standard categories, edit every percentage or amount to match your priorities, then track what you have actually spent against each line.

Quick example: a $25,000 budget at the default split puts $11,250.00 into venue and catering, $3,000.00 into photography and video and $750.00 into the cake, and the 10 categories add back up to exactly $25,000.00.

The split below starts from standard wedding percentages — change ANY percentage or ANY amount to make it your own. Type in the gold boxes: editing a percentage updates its amount, and editing an amount updates its percentage.

How each number is worked out

Allocated for each category = total budget x its percentage / 100, rounded to the nearest cent.

Typing an amount instead: if you type a figure into the Amount $ column, that row's Share % is worked out as amount ÷ total budget × 100 (one decimal place), and every total is then calculated from the figures in the boxes.

Remaining = allocated - actual spent for that category. A negative remaining figure means that category is over budget and is flagged in red.

Totals: the allocated total is the sum of the 10 allocated lines, the actual total is the sum of what you typed, and the remaining total is allocated total - actual total. If the percentages add up to exactly 100, the allocated total equals your budget exactly. If they do not, a warning is shown and the allocated total is reported honestly as the sum of the lines.

Frequently asked questions

How is a $25,000 wedding budget usually split?

At the default percentages, a $25,000 budget gives $11,250.00 to venue and catering, $3,000.00 to photography and video, $2,250.00 to attire and beauty, $2,000.00 to flowers, $1,500.00 each to music and to décor and rentals, $1,000.00 each to rings and to other costs and buffer, and $750.00 each to cake and to stationery and cards. Those 10 lines add up to exactly $25,000.00.

What percentage of a wedding budget goes on the venue and catering?

The default here is 45 percent, so $11,250.00 of a $25,000 budget, $9,000.00 of a $20,000 budget and $22,500.00 of a $50,000 budget.

What happens if my percentages do not add up to 100?

The calculator shows a warning and still does the maths honestly: each category is allocated its percentage of the total you entered, and the allocated total is the sum of those lines, even if that is more or less than your budget. At 90 percent in total, a $20,000 budget allocates only $18,000.00, leaving $2,000.00 unassigned.

How do I know if a category is over budget?

Type what you have actually spent in the Actual spent column. If actual spent is more than the allocated amount, the remaining figure for that row turns negative, is shown in red and is marked over budget.

How much should I keep back as a buffer?

The default split keeps 4 percent in the Other and buffer category, which is $1,000.00 on a $25,000 budget and $2,000.00 on a $50,000 budget. Keeping a buffer means one surprise bill does not break the whole plan.

Can I change how the budget is split?

Yes — every figure in the gold boxes is editable. Change a Share % and its Amount $ updates straight away. Or type your own figure into the Amount $ column and that row's Share % updates to match (your amount ÷ total budget × 100, to one decimal place). The Actual spent and Remaining columns then track against your edited split.
